A senior member of the Senate Banking Committee is questioning how the Treasury secretary has been handling the controversial bonuses paid out by a bailed-out company.

Sen. Richard Shelby wants to know why Timothy Geithner (GYT'-nur) didn't try to block the millions of dollars in AIG bonus payments. The Alabama Republican also wonders whether the American taxpayers will ever get their money back.

Appearing on the CBS "Early Show," Shelby stopped short of calling for Geithner's resignation.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama has directed Geithner to see if there's any way to retrieve or stop the AIG payout. He's joined lawmakers in expressing outrage at reports that AIG went ahead with $165 million in bonuses even as it took more than $170 billion in bailout money.
